DIY Plaid Buffalo Checked Reindeer

by Lynn Lilly, Dec 01 2022

Go for mad for plaid with Unicorn SPiT Gel Stain! This red and black buffalo plaid painted deer head will give a rustic look to any decor. We have been following our friend Weekend Craft and her notorious buffalo check patterns for some time. We hope we did her proud!

Materials:

  • Wooden deer head cutout
  • Unicorn SPiT Gel Stain in Molly Red Pepper
  • Unicorn SPiT Gel Stain in Midnight’s Blackness
  • Non-Water-Based Clear Coat Sealer
  • Painter’s tape
  • Paint Brushes
  • Plastic cup

Directions:

  1. Paint the wooden reindeer shapes with Unicorn SPiT Gel Stain in Molly Red Pepper. Paint 2 coats allowing Unicorn SPiT to dry in between coats.
  2. Spray with a non-water-based clear coat sealer and allow to dry.
  3. Mask off vertical lines with painter’s tape. Apply strips of tape edge to edge, covering the entire piece, then pull off every other strip to create even lines.
  4. Pour Molly Red Pepper into a cup. Add drops of Midnight’s Blackness and mix well until a desired burgundy color is obtained.
  5. Paint exposed areas of the wooden shape with the burgundy mix and allow to dry.
  6. Remove painter’s tape.
  7. Mask off horizontal lines with painter’s tape. Apply strips of tape edge to edge, covering the entire piece, then pull off every other strip to create even lines.
  8. Paint exposed areas of the wooden shape with the burgundy mix and allow to dry. DO NOT REMOVE TAPE.
  9. Replace painter’s tape on the same original vertical lines that were previously covered. This creates a grid.
  10. Paint the exposed areas with Midnight’s Blackness and allow to dry.
  11. Carefully remove painter’s tape.
  12. Spray with a non-water-based clear coat sealer and allow to dry.

Decorating with this checked decor will make you want to break out the cozy flannel!
